WORKSHOP Resilience in Practice: Emotional Intelligence and Cultural Values for Oregon Libraries

Oregon library staff are facing growing emotional demands—rising workloads, budget cuts, and increased interactions with vulnerable populations are pushing many toward burnout. This program invites those working in libraries in Oregon to explore how examining their own emotional intelligence can foster resilience, self-regulation, and a renewed sense of purpose. We will connect emotional intelligence skills—such as self-awareness, empathy, and emotional regulation—to the cultural values that shape how we present ourselves in our work and within our communities. This program provides an opportunity to pause, reflect, and leave with practical tools for developing emotional strength and culturally responsive practice in challenging times.

This FREE workshop for library workers is brought to you by the REFORMA | Oregon Chapter and division of the Oregon Library Association. Funding provided through the State Library of Oregon LSTA grant.

Presenter: Dr. Michele A. L. Villagran, Associate Professor, School of Information San José State University; and CEO and founder, CulturalCo, LLC

Welcoming Communities: Immigration Resources and Legal Advocacy in Oregon Libraries

Join us for an OLA conference session co-sponsored by the REFORMA Division and the Legislative Committee of the Oregon Library Association.

With Oregon’s immigrant populations growing and diversifying, libraries are increasingly relied upon as a first point of access for information, support, and connection. Yet, library staff often find themselves under-resourced or uncertain in responding to immigration-related questions and requests. In this session, co-sponsored by the Oregon Library Association’s Legislative Committee and REFORMA Oregon, attendees will gain valuable insights into current Oregon immigration policies, legal advocacy partnerships, and best practices for offering respectful, culturally responsive services. This program will feature an experienced immigration rights advocate who will cover the basics of immigration law relevant to libraries, share vetted resources, and discuss ways libraries can support immigrant patrons within legal boundaries. Participants will leave with a resource toolkit tailored to Oregon libraries, actionable strategies, and a clearer understanding of how to create welcoming, well-informed spaces for immigrant communities.

Registration for the 2025 OLA Conference is required to attend this event. Click here to learn more.
